My wild self

Last week room 18 made our wild self using this website http://www.buildyourwildself.com/. My ones name is The lio-pol-wal-ark-at-crocodile.

Here are some facts about my one.

Polar bear ears -It gets cold in the Arctic (down to -37 °C). For warmth, my polar bear ears are small and covered in fur even on the inside. When diving, my ears close to keep cold water out.

Rodrigues bat wings - my Rodrigues bat wings are very different from bird wings. Bird wings are made like human arm bones. But my bat wings are more like really long fingers. Creepy long fingers!

Nurse shark fins - I can use my nurse shark fins to rest in the shallow water during the day, so I am ready to hunt the seafloor at night. That means I'm a nocturnal hunter.

This is my photo.

Worlds Worst Children Response

This term, Room 18 has been reading The World's Worst Children by David Walliams.  I've really enjoyed the book. Room 18 has been doing reading responses on the different children. The picture below is my picture of Nigel Nit-Boy with his nits swarming to the broccoli.

Here are some sentences about the book.

Nigel Nit-Boy is a boy who loves nits because he has had no pets, he treats his nits like pets.  At school one day, Nigel heard of a girl called Tina who had nits too.  Nigel chased Tina through the playground so that he could get her nits. Once Nigel had Tina’s nits and the school cat’s nits, his aunt made him a Super Nit-Boy outfit.  He got his nits and his costume ready and he set off to school. First he ordered his nits to attack his headmaster because Nigel wanted to get revenge on him for giving Nigel detention. After the headmaster, Nigel was going to attack the dinner lady because she had always insisted on him eating yucky green broccoli.

Reading in Unusual Places

This week at our school is Book Week. We have been busy reading to ourselves, our peers and younger children from our school, dressing up as our favourite book character and completing a quiz about books. Our challenge at home was to take a photo of us reading in the most unusual place. Here is my photo where I am reading with 9 month old twins, Bryn and Morgan.

Maths - subtraction

This week we have been revising our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. For home learning this week, I have the problem 57 - 29 =? Here are my two strategies: place value and reversibility.

Reversibility

57 - 29 = ?
29 + __ = 57
29 + 1 = 30
30 + 20 = 50
50 + 7 = 57

I need to add 1, 20 and 7 because they're the numbers I added on above.

1 + 20 + 7 = 28  therefore the answer of the question 57 - 29 = 28

Place Value

57 - 29 = ?
57 - 20 = 37
37 - 9 = 28

So the answer to the question is 57 - 29 = 28

Wearable Arts

Wearable Arts...being on stage!

I heard the audience clap crazily as Room 18 & 21 entered the black catwalk.

I heard the song Happy pounding on the stage.

I saw the silver shimmery curtains glittering in the bright colored stage light.

I felt the hot breath from my white spray paint mask going back on my face.

I felt my big suit falling down onto the cold black catwalk.

I wondered how long it will take to get to the end of the long catwalk.

I wondered if my group put all their effort into my group's vast spray can.

Spelling Sentences,

This year for Home Learning Room 18 completes their spelling sentences each week and we have to use these conjunctions.

Animal Report

This term room 18 has been doing Information Reports on animals. I did wasps. When I was doing this I found lots of cool facts about wasps.

Here is my Information Report:

Do you know that there are more than 75,000 identified species of wasps? Hymenoptera is the scientific name for wasp. Wasps are Insects, the Queen lives for 1 year but all the others live for 12-22 days. They grow up to 3.8 cm. Wasps are a dull black or brown to a brilliant red, yellow or blue in colour. They are not nocturnal which means they are awake during the day time.

Wasp live in almost every country of the world. They make nests out of mud and some use wood. Wasps live in nests with 10,000 or more wasps. They really like warm spots, banks, attics and house roofs.

Wasps have two pairs of wings, antennas, smooth bodies, no hair, black head and they have a thorax. They also have 3 pairs of yellow legs. Most often they have a long slender connection between the abdomen and the thorax. Their bodies are dull black or brown to brilliant red, yellow or blue in colour. They grow up to 3.8 cm and they can fly.

Wasps eat other insects, fallen fruit, plants, spiders, caterpillars, ants, bees, flies and nestling birds and nectar.

Wasps do not collect pollen, unfortunately wasps can sting more than once. The wasp stings are rare because they only sting when they get annoyed at you, or when you hurt them. When other animals or people go too close they get attacked. Wasps will charge at anyone within 7 metres. Wasps have a really fast wing beat of 117-247 beats per second. They do not store food.
Wasps only have one baby in their lives. Wasps lay eggs and their baby is called a larva.

Wasp have 10 predators such as dragonflies, robber flies, hornets, centipedes, spiders, blackbirds, magpies, starlings, and humans. Humans are only predators when they sting us because we kill them and when people get wasp nests out of their houses.

Wasps can sting you when they are dead but only female can sting you. Step by step how to treat a wasp sting.
Step 1. Wash the wasp sting with soap and water to remove the venom.
Step 2. Put a cold pack on to stop as much pain and swelling as possible.
Step 3 Keep clean and dry. Wasp stings should take 2-3 days to go away.

I think people should treat wasps better because wasps will only sting when you annoy them, it’s like getting told off. When you see a wasp in your house it is probably because they are looking for a home.
