Stepping in to the shoes of James K Baxter

My Uncle’s Farm

The Masterton farm was usual enough; it had Freisen
Bulls eating vigorously in the fenced paddocks,
Circular bales wrapped in green plastic, white
Standard poles dividing the paddocks into feeding
Areas, two red Honda quad bikes, a half filled wood
Shed, and a new silver with a tandem bike,
Lots of road bikes, a bale feeder, a ride on mower, a
Hydraulic tipping trailer
That I was always allowed to touch.
Me and my uncle did what farmers do - moved the cows
To another break, weighed the cows to see when they
Were ready to go to market, drenched the cows to keep
Them healthy, installed gates between the paddocks, and at
The end of the day
Swam in the solar powered pool close to the farm house.
Doing Very Important Farmwork.

Home Learning Maths Subtraction Strategies

Last week Room 19 were using different strategies to work out subtraction problems. Here are two of my strategies.

James brought 15.54 metres  of material. He needed 13.16 metres to make a t-shirt for Hagrid. How much material would be left over after James had finished making the t-shirt? Have a go at using these two effective strategies.

     Reversibility
   15.54 -13.16 = ?
   13.16 + 2.38 = 15.54
   13.16 + 0.04 ➝ 13.20
   13.20 + 0.80 ➝ 14.0
   14.0 + 1.0 ➝ 15.0
   15.0 + 0.50 ➝ 15.50
   15.50 + 0.04 = 15.54
   James had 2.38 metres left

   Equal adjustments
   15.54 - 13.16 = 2.38m
   +0.46   +0.46
   16.0 - 13.62 = 2.38m
   James had 2.38 metres left

Home Learning Maths Subtraction Strategies

Last week our class was doing subtraction for maths.
Here are 3 of my strategies.
Mrs Olesen saved $3024 for her summer holiday. She ended up spending $2795. How much money did she have left after her holiday?
Place Value
3024 - 2795 =
3024 - 2000➝ 1024
1024 - 700➝ 324
324 - 90➝ 236
236 - 5 = 229
Equal Adjustments
3024 - 2795 =
+5      +5
3029 - 2800 = 229
Reversibility
3024 - 2795=
2795 + 229 = 3024
2795 +5 ➝2800
2800 + 200➝3000
3000 + 20➝3020
3020 + 4 = 3024

5+200+20+4=229
Mrs Olesen had $229 left after her holiday.

I Am James

I am a mathematician and  a really fast swimmer.
I wonder what the answer is.
I hear water splashing as I hit the water.
I see the red frames of my glasses.
I want lego.
I am a mathematician and  a really fast swimmer.
I pretend to be the smartest mathematician in the world.
I feel the cold splashes as I dived in.
I touch the cold bricks of my lego.
I worry about my cat fighting with other cats.
I cry tears of joy when I come 1st in swimming sports.
I am  mathematician and  a really fast swimmer.
I understand coding.
I say t’n’t.
I dream that have 1 million dollars.
I try to win my races.
I hope I win in my next race.
I am a mathematician and  a really fast swimmer.

Kayaking in Okarito's Lagoon.

I went to the West Coast. When I was there I visited Okarito. I went kayaking with my Dad and we saw a water fall.
