Multiplication strategy

Last week I did problem solving using multiplication. I solved 4 multiplication questions and this is one of them. I solved them with my maths mates Blake and Sammy.

"The Legend classes each had 48 children in each of the 4 houses. How many children altogether?"

I did a strategy called place value.

4 x 48=?
4 x 40=l60
4 x 8 =32
32+160=192

  1. Well done James. This is such a clever technique. I will have to remember it for next time I am doing big multiplications. Maybe when I am working on the staffing for the New Central Library? Eg. There are 5 floors, and each floor needs 13 librarians on a Saturday, how many librarians altogether?

    1. 5 x 13 =

      5 x 10 =50

      5 x 3 =15

      15 +50 =65

  2. What a fantastic strategy, James. I'll have to try that out myself sometime :-) Love Mum
