Dear Dad
Did you love camp as much as I did? My favourite part was the kayaking. It reminded me of the time we kayaked across Okarito Lagoon except it was vastly different. It was different because it was in a bay not a lagoon. It was also different because I was in a single not a double kayak.
What was yours? Here is a piece of writing that I have completed about my time at Wainui Camp.
KAYAKING
I heard
The cold water being pushed while i paddled away from sam so i don't get tagged in the game of build up.
I heard
Splashes as Olivia jumped into the cold water of Tekau Bay
I saw
Brightly colored kayaks lined up nicely on the shore waiting for kids to get into them and paddle out to sea
I Felt
The cold water as I jumped into it and swam back to my kayak
I Felt
The cold paddle as I paddled away from Sam in the game of build up we played
I Wondered
How fast I was kayaking in the game of build up.
I Wondered
How long till the instructor would finish tying the kayaks on the trailer and we could leave.
I wonder what your highlight or challenge was? This is one about everything.
Everything
I heard
Music that the instructor was playing through the radio as I ran back to where the instructor was after search and rescue
I heard
People supporting Sam as he climbed to the tree house at the top of the tree from where he abseiled down.
I saw
Big blue brils as my group started tying knots to keep them on
I Felt
The cold water on my feet as I launched the raft for its test run out to sea.
I Felt
The rocks as I crossed the river to my group's hiding spot when we were playing hide and seek with radios.
I Wondered
How long it would take the other groups to find my group’s hiding spot.
I Wondered
If I would be able to climb up to the top of the abseiling tree and go down it
Thank you for taking the time to join us on camp. I really enjoyed your delicious meals that you made Thank you for helping me with abseiling.
Your son
James
What a fantastic time you had at Wainui, James. I remember having a great time there in year 12 on a Biology field trip. One of my classmates was from Canada and when we saw a possum one night as we were going back to our bunkrooms she was desperate for one of us to catch it so she could pat it. Poor Stephanie was quite grumpy when we refused!
